To worm effectively it is important to know how much your horse weighs as underdosing means that the dose may be ineffective and a waste of time. Overdosing can also cause problems but ost horse wormers are very well tolerated and usually tested at higher dose volumes.
A horse wormer schedule is important not simply to reduce the worm burden of the horse, and dangerous worm burdens such as the encysted small redworm which can be fatal to horses, but also to stop resistance.
Faecal worm egg counts during the grazing season can help to reduce the amount of wormer used which in turn helps reduce the potential for resistance to these anthelmintics.
While there is no known resistance to wormers such as moxidectin it is important for us all to work together to prevent this from happening in the future.
Contamination of pasture is another important consideration. Here are some helpful hints.
We realise it is not always possible but if you can rotate your pastures every few months.
Perform fwec faecal worm egg counts in the summer.
Keep horses per acre to approximately one to help prevent overgrazing, this can also help to keep egg contamination to a minimum.
There is usually little cross contamination between horses, cattle and sheep so if you can let them graze together.
Try to pick up once a week and compost a good distance from grazing.
