White, aqueous suspension containing 10% w/v lufenuron.

For cats less than 4 kg bodyweight and weaned kittens

Package contains 10 pre-filled sterile syringes. One syringe dispenses 0.4 ml of suspension containing

40 mg of the active ingredient lufenuron (PROGRAM 40).

For cats greater than or equal to 4 kg bodyweight

Package contains 10 pre-filled sterile syringes. One syringe dispenses 0.8 ml of suspension containing

80 mg of the active ingredient lufenuron (PROGRAM 80).

Uses

For the six-month long-term prevention and control of flea infestation and the treatment of flea allergic dermatitis in cats.

PROGRAM is effective against the pre-adult stages of the dominant flea species Ctenocephalides felis and Ctenocephalides canis.

PROGRAM Suspension for Injection can be administered to all cats including weaned kittens, pregnant and lactating queens.

Dosage and administration

The minimum recommended dose rate is 10 mg lufenuron/kg bodyweight when administered parenterally.

This is achieved by giving:

Cats and weaned kittens up to 4 kg: content of one syringe dispensing 0.4 ml suspension (PROGRAM 40).

Cats equal to or greater than 4 kg: content of one syringe dispensing 0.8 ml suspension (PROGRAM 80).

Administration

The syringe must be shaken vigorously to reconstitute the suspension and then injected immediately. For the product to be fully effective, the whole contents of the syringe must be injected subcutaneously, e.g. dorsally anterior to the shoulder blades. It is recommended that cats be retreated at six-month intervals to ensure continuous effective control of flea development. If cats have a high level of flea infestation at the start of the treatment, it may be necessary to administer a flea adulticide during the first one or two months. In cases of severe hypersensitivity, further use of an adulticide may be needed. It is essential that all cats (except unweaned kittens) living in a household are treated with PROGRAM to stop flea infestation. Dogs in the same household should be treated as recommended by the prescribing veterinary surgeon.

Contra-indications, warnings, etc

Contra-indications

None. The product is compatible with other flea control products.

Warnings

PROGRAM 40 and 80 must not be used in dogs.

Care should be taken to avoid accidental self injection. In the event of accidental self injection seek medical advice. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. In the event of accidental eye or skin contact, wash/irrigate the area with clean running water. Seek medical attention if irritation persists. Wash hands after use.

The product should be injected under aseptic conditions, e.g. swab the site with disinfectant or spirit prior to injection.

In the cat, to achieve six-month flea control, a small subcutaneous depot is required. Injection site reactions may occur in some cats, in particular, a small painless swelling which disappears, in general, after a few weeks.

In rare cases, lethargy may occur for a few hours after injection, however, it quickly disappears.

Any unused veterinary medicinal product or waste materials derived from them should be disposed of in accordance with local requirements.

The syringe must be used only once.

Keep out of the reach of children.

For animal treatment only.

Pharmaceutical precautions

Protect from freezing.

Further information

No harmful effects are to be expected when this product is given during pregnancy and lactation. No evidence of interactions with other medicaments has been observed. The active ingredient, lufenuron, is an insect development inhibitor (IDI) belonging to the chemical class

of benzoylureas. Lufenuron (INN) is an inhibitor of chitin synthesis and deposition. When administered systemically to the animal, fleas infesting the cat ingest the active ingredient with their blood meal and transfer it to their eggs. As a consequence, the formation of larval chitin structures, a process essential to insects, and the development of viable offspring are blocked. After subcutaneous administration of the product, the active ingredient is absorbed from the injection site and preferentially sequestered in the adipose tissues, from where it continuously releases metabolically unchanged into the bloodstream. Effective blood levels of lufenuron are attained within 21 days after the initial injection and the low elimination rate assures an effective concentration of the active ingredient in the bloodstream (about 50–100 ppb) for at least 6 months.
