Eqvalan Duo Wormer for Horses
Eqvalan Duo is a specialised horse wormer designed to effectively target redworms, bots, pinworms, and tapeworms in horses. It can be used can be used in pregnant mares after the first three months of gestation and during lactation. Safety studies were not conducted in foals younger than 2 months of age or in stallions. As such, it is not recommended to use Eqvalan Duo in these categories of animals. Each syringe will treat up to 600kg bodyweight.
Amounts to Be Administered and Administration Route
Precise bodyweight and dosage determination are crucial before treatment. Using a horse weight tape can aid in accurately estimating bodyweight. The contents of one syringe can treat horses up to 600 kg. Calibrated markings are provided at 100 kg bodyweight intervals. Adjust the syringe to the calculated dosage by setting the ring on the appropriate position on the plunger.
Directions for Use
- Eqvalan Duo is for oral administration only. Follow these steps: 1. While holding the plunger, turn the knurled ring on the plunger ¼ turn to the left and slide it until the stop ring aligns with the prescribed weight marking. 2. Lock the ring in place by turning it ¼ turn to the right, aligning the arrows on the ring and plunger rod. 3. Ensure the horse's mouth is free of feed. 4. Remove the syringe tip cover. 5. Insert the syringe tip into the horse's mouth at the interdental space and deposit the paste at the base of the tongue. 6. Immediately raise the horse's head for a few seconds to ensure the paste is consumed.

Special Warnings for Each Target Species
- To prevent resistance development and ensure effective therapy, avoid the following practices: - Too frequent and repeated use of anthelmintics from the same class, over an extended period of time. - Underdosing, which can result from underestimating bodyweight, incorrect product administration, or uncalibrated dosing devices.
- Suspected resistance cases should be investigated further with appropriate tests, such as a Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test. If resistance is indicated, switch to an anthelmintic from a different pharmacological class with a distinct mode of action.
- Resistance to macrocyclic lactones (including ivermectin) has been reported in Parascaris equorum in EU horses. Therefore, product use should be guided by local epidemiological information and recommendations to prevent further resistance development.

Persons administering the product should: - Wash their hands after use. - Avoid smoking, drinking, or eating while handling the product. - Prevent skin and eye contact with the product to avoid irritation. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. If accidental ingestion or eye irritation occurs, seek medical advice promptly and provide the package insert or label to the physician.
Adverse Reactions
- Horses heavily infected with Onchocerca spp. microfilariae may experience edema and pruritus post-treatment, attributed to the death of a large number of microfilariae. These symptoms typically resolve within a few days, but symptomatic treatment may be advisable.
- In cases of significant tapeworm infestations, mild and transient colic and loose stools may be observed.
- Rare reports exist of oral inflammation, affecting the mouth, lips, and tongue, leading to symptoms like edema, hypersalivation, erythema, tongue disorders, and stomatitis. These reactions are temporary, appearing within 1 hour and resolving within 24 to 48 hours post-administration. Symptomatic treatment is recommended for severe oral reactions.
Overdose
- No undesirable effects related to treatment were observed in 2-month-old horses treated with Eqvalan Duo at up to three times the recommended dose or in adult horses treated at ten times the recommended dose.
- Transient effects, such as decreased food consumption, increased body temperature, salivation, and vision impairment, were noted in horses treated twice with an ivermectin oral paste or once with Eqvalan Duo at ten times the recommended dose (2 mg/kg bodyweight). These changes typically resolved within five days.
- No specific antidote has been identified; however, symptomatic therapy may be beneficial.
