Uses
Copinox Lamb is indicated for the prevention and treatment of hypocuprosis in sheep (lambs)
Mode of action
A proportion of the administered copper oxide lodges in the abomasum of the treated animal. This provides a sustained-release source of copper for absorption from the gut for 2 - 3 months. Copper stored in the liver maintains blood levels. This steady supplementation ensures adequate copper status during periods of inadequate copper intake.
Dosage and administration
For oral administration only. Place the capsule at the back of the mouth, beyond the hump of the tongue, using a suitable dosing gun fitted with the special adaptors provided. The capsule is inserted at one end and the other attached to the drench gun. The capsule is ejected by expulsion with water. To avoid injury, the dosing gun should be used carefully and without force. Normal swallowing movements should allow the dose to be passed easily into the back of the mouth, the capsule may then be ejected and passage of the gun beyond this point is not necessary. Always check that the animal swallows the capsule. To be used at intervals of not less than 6 months.
Lamb Dosage
Lambs over 5 weeks of age and over 10kg bodyweight may be given 1 x Copinox Lamb 2g white capsule.
Contra-indications, warnings, etc
Withdrawal periods
Meat - zero days Milk zero hours.
Do not use unless copper deficiency is known to exist or known to be a risk. Do not administer to pre-ruminant lambs or lambs under 10kg bodyweight. No other form of copper supplementation should be given immediately prior to or 6 months after administration of the capsules. Do not exceed the recommended dose. Copper toxicity may lead to the following clinical signs; thirst, apathy, haemolytic crises, jaundice, hepatic necrosis and death. No specific antidote is available for use in food producing animals. Care must be taken when dosing animals to avoid causing injury to the mouth and pharynx. Animals should only be dosed if copper deficiency exists or is known to be a risk. Caution is advised before treating housed sheep and those breeds known to be susceptible to copper toxicity (e.g. North Ronaldsay Texel and Lleyn). This product is not effective in alleviating signs of swayback in lambs which already show signs of he disease. For animal use only. Keep out of the reach of children.

Further information
Primary copper deficiency arises from a direct shortage of copper in the diet whereas secondary copper deficiency results from the antagonistic effects of elements such as molybdenum and sulphur upon absorption. Copinox is an effective long acting supplement in both cases. The severity of copper deficiency, whether of primary or secondary origin, varies greatly from farm to farm. The recommended dosage should maintain adequate copper levels for the whole grazing season. Veterinary surgeons may need to adapt their advice to suit local conditions.
